This event takes place as we approach the eighth anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire, a generational tragedy for London and the UK, which ultimately claimed 72 lives. We will screen two films which form part of our wider investigation into the events surrounding the fire.
The Situated Testimonies of Grenfell (2024, 62 minutes) weaves together interconnected stories of the night of the fire, from the perspectives of survivors, bereaved families, and witnesses. Ten individuals affected by the fire worked with FA researchers to tell their stories and reconstruct the events of the night using a 3D digital model of the tower and its surrounding environment as a mnemonic device. Participating individuals include Marcio Gomes, Edward Daffarn, Nazanin Aghlani, Shahrokh Aghlani, Nicholas Burton, Nina Masroh, David O’Connell, and Sarah Ali.
I Don’t Remember, I Don’t Recall (2024, 7 minutes) examines the most common responses given by employees of the companies considered jointly responsible for the fire, when asked about their knowledge of the management and refurbishment of the tower block. FA produced this video at the request of two individuals from among the bereaved and survivors of the fire, Hanan Wahabi and Sandra Ruiz.
The film screenings will be followed by a discussion between Samaneh Moafi (FA Assistant Director of Research) and Edward Daffarn (a co-founder of the Grenfell Action Group, who lived on the 16th floor of Grenfell Tower).
