The Sea Around Us is an ambitious, large-scale group exhibition that explores our complex relationship with the ocean through installation, film, participation and sound. John Akomfrah’s epic 2015 film Vertigo Sea and two video-investigations by Forensic Oceanography and Forensic Architecture bookend a conversation on humankind’s interactions with the sea; while Susanne M. Winterling’s planetary opera in three acts, divided by the currents (2018) and planetary loop of gravitation (2018) create a sensual, immersive and intimate moment to explore the relationship between marine ecology, climate change, and the Capitolocene through an ecological worldview. The show is accompanied by a new music performance and sound installation by composer and sound artist Karen Power, and a specially commissioned essay, It Dazzles me Slowly, by artist Rosie O’Reilly (IE).
