What if architectural techniques and spatial modelling could be used in the pursuit of justice in the digital age? The work of agency Forensic Architecture does just that, harnessing a variety of digital and architectural techniques to investigate human rights injustices committed by police, the military and corporations across the world.
Working in partnership with grassroots organisations and activist networks, Forensic Architecture have carved out a reputation as a trusted and proven voice in the field of human rights – their work has been presented as evidence in international and national courtrooms as well as parliamentary assemblies and investigations. Their exhibitions showcase the methods and technology behind their startling, eye-opening dissections of events – from targeted Russian bombings of hospitals in Syria and shootings of civilians by the Israeli Army in Palestine – illustrating how they analyse events and build the case.
At Sónar+D Lisboa, FA will exhibit their investigation into the assassination of Pavlos Fyssas, a Greek anti-fascist activist and rapper who was murdered by members of Golden Dawn, the neo-Nazi organisation and erstwhile political party. Their investigation had widespread repercussions, demonstrating that the assassination was carried out in a coordinated manner by a Golden Dawn hit squad, and that the police failed to intervene despite being present at the scene. These findings eventually contributed to Golden Dawn being declared a criminal organisation and its leaders being sentenced to prison.
