On 20 July, Forensic Architecture and Praxis Films requested that our work, ‘Triple-Chaser’, be withdrawn from the 2019 Whitney Biennial.
Through his ownership of the Safariland Group. and his partial control of Sierra Bullets, Kanders profits from the sale of both lethal and ‘less-lethal’ munitions to governments around the world.
Our research has shown that bullets made by Sierra Bullets are used by the Israeli military against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. In July 2019, our researchers found the below bullet near the Al Bureij protest camp, in Gaza. It bears the hallmarks of an ‘open tip’ MatchKing bullet, produced by Sierra Bullets.
For over a year, Palestinians have been creatively resisting Israel’s illegal occupation through weekly protests at the Gaza border. At these protests, they are regularly targeted by Israeli snipers, using bullets manufactured by Sierra Bullets.
As a result of our findings, and in solidarity with Palestinian resistance, Forensic Architecture and Praxis Films together believe our position within the Biennial is no longer tenable.
We continue to demand that Kanders is removed from his position on the Whitney’s board of trustees.
