Hell on Earth: Figures of Domination with Eyal Weizman and Marco d'Eramo

10 Nov 2021, 5:00 pm

Scuderie del Quirinale, Rome

The Quirinale Stables return with a high-profile international project celebrating an important anniversary of culture: the Inferno exhibition, curated by Jean Clair, on the occasion of the seven hundred year anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri.

The first major exhibition dedicated to this theme, Inferno will show the presence in iconography and thought of the concept of hell and damnation from the Middle Ages through to the present day.

Accompanied by the Dante’s word, visitors will encounter terrifying places and lacerating visions of Hell as they have been represented by artists of all eras: from schematic medieval scenes to sublime Renaissance and Baroque inventions, from tormented romantic visions to merciless psychoanalytic interpretations of the twentieth century. The journey into Hell will take us deeper and deeper into the various transliterations of the experience of Hell on earth: madness, alienation, war, extermination. After passing the culmination of Evil, the exhibition will find its conclusion with the evocation of the idea of salvation, entrusted by Dante to the last verse of the Canticle: and then we went out to see the stars again.

The event L’Inferno in Terra: Figure del Dominio (Hell on Earth: Figures of Domination) with Eyal Weizman and Marco d’Eramo is part of a rich cycle of face-to-face events accompanying the exhibition and exploring its themes, expanding the concept of hell from a perspective of interdisciplinarity.
