In collaboration with Looiersgracht 60, The Large Glass Department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie presents State of Transparency, A survey into the material – and lingual – connotations of a common expression.
The word ‘transparency’ alludes to a certain material condition, and through its material qualities it is used as a metaphor in various political, societal and artistic contexts. The State of Transparency focuses on both the literal/conditional and the metaphorical aspects of the word, trying to find a visual congruency between them.
As per the title, the projects (artworks) featured in State of Transparency draw as much on the literal and material models of transparency as they do on ones from the political or societal realms. Fundamentally, the call for transparency in societal discourse is a call for more information. Being able to see what is happening corresponds to an understanding of what is visible, likewise, this can be said for the interpretation of art. That said, being witness to the work does not however automatically give us access to begin understanding its process or concept.
As part of this exhibition, Forensic Architecture will be exhibiting our investigation into a Drone Strike in Miranshah
